SUMMARY:Workshop by Makers Will Make | Phygital Project
DESCRIPTION:Digital Fabrication for the Stage\, Costumes\, Props and Scenery\nA University of Nicosia Research Foundation workshop for the project Phygital \nThis workshop explores how new fabrication technologies may be utilized for the creation of stage design for contemporary dance performances.  Participants will be asked to explore photographs/ forms and digitally translate them into costumes\, props and scenery for a performance taking place in autumn 2019 in Limassol and Nicosia. Participants will use our equipment to experiment and bring their thoughts to life with a chance of their work featuring in the performance. Credit will be given to the artists of the chosen work. \nParticipation is limited to a maximum of 10 participants. \nParticipants must be literate in design software programmes and will need their laptop for the workshop. \nTo register please email: Tselika.e@unic.ac.cy and makerswillmake@gmail.com \nInclude your Name; Email; Mobile number and a Short Bio if available. \nRegistrations will take place on a first come first served basis. \nAbout Makers Will Make\nAn initiative of bytheway productions is space for designers in Limassol\, a place for experimentation\, expression and creation\, equipped with a large-scale laser cutter which is open to the public. \nIt aims to be the meeting point of creative people in the wider field of design as the dynamic of space\, in line with the modern maker movement\, offers countless possibilities for experimental approaches to materials\, processes and applications.  Design promotion\, freedom of experimentation\, collaboration and professional networking\, become facilitated under one working environment where each creator has the opportunity to draw inspiration\, to discuss\, experiment and share. Through implementing the contemporary experience of designing and materializing an idea\, the visitor/creator participates in the whole process\, from the drawing board to controlling the production and aesthetic of the final result. Makers from all fields of design (graphics\, interior\, fashion\, architecture\, art are just some of them …) can re-explore the boundaries of their art. \nFor more information you can visit the website: makerswillmake.com \nPhygital is an Interreg V 2014-2020 BalkanMed\, EU-funded programme being implemented in Greece\, Albania and Cyprus and involves the development of makerspaces – one in each country – that will work with the local community. In Cyprus\, the project’s work is being carried out by the University of Nicosia Research Centre in collaboration with the Municipality of Lakatamia/hack66 and will focus on social art practices exploring the melding of open technology\, art and design. The project operates on the basis of the ‘design global – manufacture local’ model which introduces innovative organisational and business patterns allowing an unprecedented booming of communities engaged in do-it-yourself (DIY) activities. It wishes to support and enhance these local capacities for innovation and utilise the opportunities the decentralised modes of production can create. The Cyprus section of the project examines the importance of makerspace culture in the advancement of contemporary social art and design practices. It delves into the principles of open source projects\, software-hardware freedom and bottom-up collaborative structures to explore ways they can be utilised – in line with social art/design practices – to address the needs of the local community. \nPHYGITAL- Catalysing innovation and entrepreneurship unlocking the potential of emerging production and business models \nLead Partner-GFOSS/ Greek Free Open Source Software Society \nPeer to Peer Alternatives – Greece (a.k.a. “P2P Lab”) \nLakatamia Municipality/ hack66- Cyprus \nOpen Labs – Albania \nMunicipality of North Tzoumerka- Greece \nUniversity of Nicosia Research Foundation (UNRF)- Cyprus \nThe National Center of Folklore Activities- Albania

SUMMARY:Citizens’ Reflections on Future of Europe | Transnational Forum
DESCRIPTION:“Citizens Public Forum FuturEU: Our Borders\, Our Security”\nTransnational Forum on campus – Part of the Citizens’ Reflections on the Future of Europe (FuturEU Project)\nThe University of Nicosia Research Foundation (UNRF)\, as a partner of a European project entitled: Citizens’ Reflections on the Future of Europe (FuturEU)\, funded by the European for Citizens Programme\, cordially invites you to a transnational forum on 22 March at the UNESCO Amphitheatre from 09:30-14:00. \nThe project aims to foster the debate and engage local societies in eight Member States\, by covering the most pressing issues of European integration in the context of the Debate for the Future of Europe and the thematic reflection papers: Social Europe\, globalisation and migration\, economic and monetary union\, EU finances\, EU defence\, digital Europe and youth. \nInvolved citizens from different Member States will have the opportunity to share their perceptions\, ideas and experiences on the future of the EU. More analytically\, citizens from eight Member States will reflect upon and propose concrete solutions that can be found through EU cooperation in support of the initiatives carried out by the EU institutions in the field. Debates\, cultural events and constructive dialogues\, among various stakeholders\, will strive for common\, accepted solutions at both the local and national level\, and will exchange thoughts and opinions at European level in an attempt to influence politicians and policy makers on promoting intercultural dialogue; combating inequality; and fostering tolerance and empathy; which\, in turn\, will bring about more cohesive\, respectful\, peaceful and tolerant EU societies. \nUNRF is going to welcome its partners on 22 March at the University’s premises. Within the theme of “Citizens Public Forum FuturEU: Our Borders\, Our Security” and “Divided Capital Visit”\, we would like to involve inter-disciplinary groups of students who will be engaged in a debate based on the Reflection Paper on the future of EU on security and defence. \nThe forum will debate on the changing forms of radicalisation\, violence\, terrorism and their impact on citizens and how peace and intolerance could be achieved. Students are invited to share in 10min presentations/mini dialogue their experiences and/or ideas based on living and studying in Nicosia within the above context. The forum will be followed by a study visit in both parts of Nicosia\, which students are very welcome to attend. \nA certificate of participation will be provided\, plus lunch to all participants. \nFor registrations\, please contact Ms. Despina Cochliou via email at cochliou.d@unic.ac.cy.

SUMMARY:Open Technologies: Their Histories\, Laws\, and Gender | Workshop
DESCRIPTION:A workshop by Natalia-Rozalia Avlona: Open Technologies: Their History\, Laws\, and Gender\nA University of Nicosia Research Foundation workshop for the project Phygital [https://phygitalproject.eu/]\nPROGRAMME \n14:30-14:45 | Introduction\n14:45-16:15 | From Digital Commons to Platform Economy: A Presentation of their history\, legal issues\, politics\, and culture\n16:15-16:45 | Discussion\n16:45-17:15 | Break\n17:15-18:15 | Gender and Open Technologies: Feminist perspectives\, challenges and potentialities\n18:15-19:30 | Workshop “Queering your wiki”\n19:30-20:00 | Open Discussion \nPlease bring your laptop with you. \n*PhotoCollage and text: Natalia-Rozalia Avlona under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International License. \nDuring the last four decades\, digital commons have shaped virtual terrains of free\, participatory and distributed production of immaterial goods. The invention of World Wide Web\, the Commons-Based Peer Production (CBPP)\, the FOSS and the Free Culture movements have formed new landscapes of governance and production as well as legal tools and virtual communities which were characterised by the “hacker ethos”. The values of sharing\, openness\, collaboration and decentralisation came to the front\, as post-capitalist values challenging the notion of “ownership” as the subject matter and heart of the traditional copyright law. On the other hand\, during the last decade\, the rapid rise of the platform economy has been appropriating the values and structures of “sharing” and “decentralisation”\, introduced by the digital commons\, into an uneven value extraction by the platforms (netarchical capitalism). \nThe last years\, the emergence of makerspaces as open\, community-led spaces\, where open source software and hardware are utilised collaboratively by individuals\, (Kostakis\, Niaros & Drechsler 2017) is re-territorialising these “digital commoning practices” with the means of additive and subtractive manufacturing technologies (3D Printing\, CNC machining) in to the “phygital” realm\, towards the production of tangible goods. However\, whilst these practices are pioneering the democratisation of technology\, dismantling the dominant legal and technical structures\, it is not clear yet how inclusive are and can be. Hence\, the feminist perspectives of open technologies are to be explored as a method and tool to expose their main challenges and potentialities.\nThis workshop will provide a systematic overview of this field\, focusing on its first part on the historical and legal aspects of the open technologies and on the second part\, on the feminist perspectives and challenges that come up by its confrontation with the gender. \nBio\nNatalia-Rozalia Avlona is a lawyer and researcher working as a research assistant for the TARGET project at ELIAMEP (Hellenic Foundation for European & Foreign Policy) in Athens.\nShe studied law at the School of Law of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (2006)\, obtained her Master’s Degree in Law (LLM) from King’s College London (2007)\, and followed courses in the department of Cultural Geography at Royal Holloway\, University of London and in the Department of Curating Contemporary Art at the Royal College of Art. Currently\, she is a Phd Candidate at the National Technical University of Athens\, and her thesis topic is “Open Technologies: Their Histories\, Laws and Genders”. Her expertise is on Digital Commons and the ways that Technology\, Law and Gender intersect in this area. \nAvlona has an international experience working in several Organizations and European Research Programmes in UK\, Belgium and Greece. Among those are the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki\, the Organisation of Industrial Property in Greece\, the Royal College of Art in London\, Abandon Normal Devices in Manchester\, the Future Emerging Technologies Department (DG Connect\, EU Commission) in Brussels\, the General Secretariat for Gender Equality and the GUnet (Greek Universities Network) in Athens. She is member of the Management Committee of Cost Action CA16121-From Sharing to Caring: Examining Socio-Technical Aspects of the Collaborative Economy (2017-2021). \nAt the moment she is part of ELIAMEP’s Junior Research Fellows Team\, working on TARGET (Taking a Reflexive Approach to Gender Equality for Gender Transformation)\, a research program that aims to contribute to the advancement of gender equality in Research and Innovation. Besides her academic career Avlona has a strong involvement as an activist in the field of digital commons and gender equality\, whilst she has run a series of workshops on Wikipedia for the Galleries\, Libraries\, Archives and Museums (GLAM) sector\, co-organised feminist workshops on FOSS at hackerspace.gr and (un)conferences on the commons. The last three years\, she is member of the Social Solidarity Economy Zone. \nFor more information you can contact:\nEvanthia Tselika\ntselika.e@unic.ac.cy\nTel. +35722842694

SUMMARY:Workshop: Making and connecting in a disconnected world
DESCRIPTION:Making and connecting in a disconnected world: Hackerspaces as representations of techno-social politics in contemporary capitalist realism\nThe workshop will address the emergence of the maker culture\, where technology and making are explored outside the professional lab\, predominantly in Hackerspaces\, Makerspaces and Fab Labs. Such spaces constitute important sites in the development of open-source hardware and software\, and provide conducive conditions for the spread of locally created technology to and often beyond technologically informed publics. Specifically\, this workshop will address the convergence of activism and the maker culture within capitalist realism. Drawing on the findings of my research\, I argue that the politics of Hackerspaces / Makerspaces and Fab Labs constitute sites that disclose contradictions and provide spaces for contesting the dominant paradigm and reflect the societies within which they operate. Users become developers themselves who simultaneously reinvent forms of consumption\, processes of learning and re-conceptualizing the relationship between science and craft\, productivism and play\, authority and informal horizontal learning. Despite the apparent social and collective nature of these practices\, there is also a parallel individualistic twist at the heart of the maker culture. \nPresentation and Dialogue\nThursday\, 11 October 2018\n18.00-21.00 \nWorkshop and brainstorming session\nSaturday\, 13 October 2018\n11.00-14.00 \nLakatamia/ hack66 Community Event\nSaturday\, 13 October 2018\n14.00 onwards \n  \nFor more information you can contact \nEvanthia Tselika- tselika.e@unic.ac.cy \n
